UAB Advances to C-USA Quarterfinals After 74-69 Victory Over UTSA

FRISCO, Texas – No. 7 seed UAB advanced into the quarterfinal round of the 2020 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championship after a 74-69 victory over No. 10 seed UTSA on Wednesday night.
Tavin Lovan led the Blazers (19-13) with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Tyreek Scott-Grayson scored 14 points and Antonio Ralat matched his career-high with 11 points in a starting role.
Keaton Wallace scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the first half for the Roadrunners (13-19). UAB held C-USA's leading scorer Jhivvan Jackson to 12 points, 15 under his season average.
UAB has early control of the contest, building a seven point lead coming out of the under 16 media timeout. The teams both caught fire coming out the break, making their next five field goal attempts as the Blazers took a 23-18 lead into the next media timeout.
After UTSA cut UAB's lead to one, the Blazers scored the next nine points to go ahead 32-22 at 7:34. The Blazers were able to keep it a two possession game for all but 22 seconds the rest of the half as Lovan's layup sent the game into halftime with UAB leading 44-38.
UAB's lead get as high as 11 points at 53-42 after back-to-back baskets from Ralat and Scott-Grayson. However, UTSA would go on a 20-7 run to take a 62-60 lead with 6:08 remaining. A Scott-Grayson layup on the next possession would tie the score and a Makhtar Gueye foul shot would give UAB the lead once again with 5:05 to play.
The game would go scoreless for nearly three minutes. The Blazers would make eight straight free throws down the stretch and force a Wallace miss that could have tied the game with 19 seconds to play which solidified the contest.
Up next, UAB will play No. 2 seed WKU. The Hilltoppers (20-10), who received a first round bye, are coming off a 91-85 victory over FIU on March 7. UAB defeated WKU 72-62 at Bartow Arena on Jan. 9. The will be televised on Stadium.
