BIRMINGHAM- After facing great competition all weekend, No. 21 ranked UAB finished in 10th place at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Arkansas.
The Blazers started the competition on Friday with five baker matches. UAB started the day off with a win over Alabama A&M (859-830). After a win in their first match, the Blazers would lose back to back matches to No. 19 Maryville (953-985) and No. 11 Louisiana Tech (947-962). UAB would have a bye in the next match in which they bowled for total pinfall only with 937. The Blazers would then have a tough loss to No. 7 Stephen F. Austin (867-973) ending the day with a record of 1-3.
"This weekend was an up and down battle," said head coach Michelle Crews. "Although our win/loss record took a beating, this was one of our best scoring weekends as a team with three players averaging over 200 on Saturday. We had two key players out with injury during the weekend, but it was a full team effort no matter who was on the lanes throwing shots. We learned a lot from the last two competitions and we are ready to put it into action this weekend during our final MEAC event of the year."
UAB would come out strong on day two with consecutive wins over No. 16 Tulane (1023-949) and Drury (1024-948) to start their Traditional match play. The Blazers would lose a nail-biter to No. 3 Nebraska (987-969) that came down to the 10th frame. UAB would lose another close match to No. 2 Sam Houston State (1061-1012) but finish the day with a win against Jackson State (1016-946) to end the day 3-2 and 4-6 overall heading into the last day of competition.
On Sunday, the Blazers squared off against Sam Houston State for a rematch from the Traditional match round. UAB would win the first game but Sam Houston would ultimately win 4-1 (196-178, 152-214, 183-248, 151-195 and 212-223). The Blazers would play No. 8 Youngstown State in the next round. It came down to seven games but UAB would come up short 4-3 (177-186, 172-210, 215-174, 179-189, 216-188, 199-190 and 173-211). The Blazers took on No. 15 Wisconsin-Whitewater in the last round and lost 4-0. UAB finished the competition in 10th place with a 4-8 record after facing nine ranked teams over the weekend.
Individually, Annie Hurley led the way with a total pinfall of 1,063 to finish in 9th place. Taylor Russell (1,051) and Rachel Strogin (1,043) finished in 14th and 16th, respectively, to finish the Blazers in the top 25 individually. Also, Katie Hurley and Elise London both set collegiate career highs in averages this weekend. Hurley had an average of 194 and London had an average of 188.
UAB will continue their schedule on Feb. 21 for the MEAC #2 in Pensacola, Fla. hosted by Florida A&M.
