Women’s Soccer Falls to FAU 2-1 on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM – FAU's Madison Davenport's goal in the 79th minute was the game winner as the Owls got by UAB 2-1 on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.
FAU got on the board first when Pernille Velta scored in the 27th minute after a scrum in the box.
Regan Kommer got the equalizer seven minutes later when a lunched ball deflected off two Owls' defenders. Kommer was able to put the ball past FAU keeper Cassidy Wasdin on the right side.
That was UAB's final shot of the 1st half as the match was deadlocked at 1-1 going into halftime.
The Owls had an opportunity to take the lead early in the 2nd half when Maddison Krstec's shot rang off the post in the 50th minute. The teams would exchange scoring chances before Velta's goal put FAU ahead for good.
Krstec led all players with six shots (three on target). Kommor had a team-high four shots (two on target).
Wasdin finished with a pair of saves, while Johanna Popp turned away six FAU shots.
"I thought we gave a really strong performance in the 1st half," said head coach Erica Demers. "We tried to take away FAU's strengths and they got frustrated. Unfortunately, when you play against a team that is has an RPI of 14 in the nation, you can't take breaks - and we did in the second half. They took advantage and we weren't able to capitalize on our opportunities in the 2nd half. We will move on and prepare for UTEP now."
The Blazers (2-3-3, 0-1-0 C-USA) will host UTEP (7-2-2, 2-0-0 C-USA) on Thursday night at 7 P.M. The Miners are coming off a 3-2 win at Marshall on Thursday.
