BIRMINGHAM – UAB and UTEP went the distance on Thursday night ending with a 0-0 draw at BBVA Field.
Johanna Popp made six saves for the Blazers (2-3-4, 0-1-1 C-USA), while her counterpart Emily Parrott turned aside three shots for the Miners (7-2-3, 2-0-1 C-USA).
The team stats were close – UTEP had 12 shots to UAB's nine and the Blazers had six corner kicks to the Miners' five.
Sarah Buse led the way for UAB with three shots, as did UTEP's Jojo Ngongo and Tessa Carlin.
The Blazers had a chance to score first, but Megan Hudgens shot from 20 yards away sailed high. On the ensuing possession, Popp made a diving save on a strike outside the box by Carlin.
In the 36th minute, Kassandra Daniel stole the ball off a UTEP defender in the zone, but her shot was right at Parrott. The Blazers had a pair of corner kicks inside the final three minutes of the first half, but could not capitalize as the teams headed to halftime.
UAB had the first chance to score in the 2nd half when Hudgens found Asha Zuniga with a cross, but her shot went high. Buse almost scored in the 61st minute after deking out a defender, but her left footed drive was corralled by Parrott.
Popp came up huge in the 80th minute, stonewalling Carlin from 10 feet out and again in the 81st minute, correctly judging the bend on Lauren Crenshaw's free kick.
UTEP had a throw in deep in UAB territory with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, but could not get a piece set up as the clock expired.
Neither team had a scoring threat in either of the overtime periods.
"Every game is hard in conference as we are all hunting after points. I thought UTEP gave us their absolute best tonight," said head coach Erica Demers. "I am excited with the direction of how we are creating attacking opportunities but unfortunately we are still missing the final touch of finishing. I thought Sarah Buse and Asha Zuniga gave great performances tonight and created a lot of those moments and Johanna Popp was great at keeping us in the game."
UAB hits the road for a Sunday afternoon matchup at Rice (5-4-1, 2-0-1 C-USA). The Owls are 1-0 win at UTSA on Sept. 29.
