WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- Tyler Johnston III threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns in his last outing at Akron and was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. Johnston III is 6-1 as a starter and has thrown for over 300 yards in three of his seven career starts.
- Johnston's top three targets have been Austin Watkins Jr., Kendall Parham and Myron Mitchell. This trio has caught 355 of Johnston's 433 passing yards and all five of his touchdown passes. All three receivers are averaging over 20 yards per catch.
- Running back Spencer Brown is 150 yards away from becoming UAB's career leading rusher. Brown has 2,668 career rushing yards and 27 total touchdowns in 28 games.
- If Brown can go over 100 yards against South Alabama he would also become UAB's leader in career 100-yard rushing games. Brown has 12 such games to his credit which is tied with Joe Webb for the most in school history. Brown will also look for his first 100-yard game of the 2019 season on Saturday.
- The Blazers once again find themselves amongst one of the most disruptive defensive units in the nation. Entering the South Alabama game, UAB ranks top 10 nationally in sacks per game, tackles for loss per game and third down defense.
- Through their first two games, UAB has compiled eight sacks and 20 TFL. The Blazers' 10.0 TFL per game rank them sixth nationally, while their 4.0 sacks per game rank them ninth in the country.
- Additionally, UAB has held its first two opponents to just 7-of-31 on third down defense, which is seventh best in the country (.226). The Blazers finished second in this category a year ago.
- Outland Trophy Watch List member Garrett Marino is off to a tremendous senior campaign. Marino is tied for a team-high 13 tackles, while also compiling 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one pass break up and two quarterback hurries.
- Along with Noah Wilder picking up a career-high 10 tackles at Akron, the UAB defense got a major boost from fellow linebacker Kristopher Moll who returned to action two weeks ago after missing the opening game of the season. The junior picked up eight tackles against Akron and looked impressive doing so. Moll sets his sights on a breakout campaign after tallying 54 tackles last season.
