MIDLAND, Texas - The UAB women's tennis team started the fall season off at theย Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. The Blazers were represented byย Marlene Herrmann,ย Dominika Hrabalovaย andย Alexia Witthaus.ย
In singles,ย Hrabalovaย and Herrmann were First Round winners.ย Hrabalovaย was a straight set winner over Eve Daniels from UTEPย 6-4, 6-4 whileย Herrmannย came back after dropping the first set 6-3 to take the matchย overย
Helena Jansen from Tyler JC by winning the second and third setsย 6-1, 6-2.
Witthaus fell to Sarah Adams from Abilene Christian 6-2, 6-1
In the second roundย Baylor'sย Kristina Sorokolet, who advanced to the finals, was aย 6-1, 6-4 winner overย Hrabalova. UAT'sย Momoka Horiguchiย needed three sets to defeat Herrmannย 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.ย
In the consolation bracket, Maria Aveigaย fromย UTEP got by Witthaus 7-5, 4-6, (11-9).
Since UAB only brought three players,ย Witthausย teamed up withย Isabella DiLauraย from Texas Tech. The duo fell toย Kristina Sorokoletย andย Anastasia Kharitonovaย of Baylor 8-6.ย Sanja Jolie andย Jasmin Buchtaย of Lamar were 8-5 winners overย Hrabalovaย and Herrmann
Up next, UAB heads to Macon, Ga.ย for theGrid Iron Classic Sept. 20-22.
