Meet the Blazers: Kassim Nicholson

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team welcomes six new faces to the team this season – three freshmen Jahein Spencer, Jalen Benjamin and Jordan Brinson, a junior college transfer – Kassim Nicholson, one former UAB baseball player – Antonio Ralat and one transfer – Rashawn Fredericks.

Before arriving in Birmingham, Nicholson played two seasons at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss.
The 6-6 forward finished his sophomore season averaging 15.0 points, 2.2 assists and 9.6 rebounds per game, which was 21st in the NJCAA. A constant fixture on the court, Nicholson averaged close to 34 minutes per game, which was 14th best in the country.
His 2018-19 season started with a bang, as he recorded double-figure scoring in the Bulldogs' first 13 contests – including a career-high 27 points in Holmes' 63-57 victory over LSU Eunice. In all, Nicholson finished the campaign with 23 double-figure scoring games including five where he scored 20+ and 13 double-doubles.
Nicholson led the No. 7 seed Bulldogs to a 72-64 upset over No. 2 seed East Mississippi CC and a 48-45 victory over No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast in the NJCAA Region XXIII tournament before falling in the championship game to #4 Pearl River 57-52. Holmes finished the year 17-10.
He was named Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges (MACJC) First Team All-State and to the Region XXIII All-Tournament Team.
During his freshman season, Nicholson averaged 9.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while earning MACJC Second Team All-State honors.
Nicholson led Holmes to an impressive 24-5 record, including a perfect 11-0 mark at home. The Bulldogs were ranked as high as #20 in the weekly NJCC polls.
The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of both the MACJC tournament and the NJCAA Region XXIII tournaments.
Prior to enrolling at Holmes, Nicholson was a standout at Callaway High School. His senior season he led the Chargers to a 23-11 record and a berth in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) semifinals. He was named to the 2017 Clarion-Ledger Fourth-Team All-State after averaging 15.3 points, 9.0 assists and 3.0 assists per game.
