Gueye to Play in FIBA World Cup for Senegal

BIRMINGHAM – UAB's men's basketball forward Makhtar Gueye has been selected as one of the final 12 players to represent Senegal in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
At age 22, Gueye is youngest member of the squad and is the only player currently on an NCAA team. The junior forward finished 2018-19 averaging 8.3 points per game, a 6.1 point increase from his freshman campaign.
He recorded four double-doubles last season, including a career-high 19 point, 11 rebound effort in UAB's victory at Marshall. He scored in double-digits in 14 games and pulled down double-figure rebounds eight times. Gueye led the Blazers with 24 blocks.
The 32-team event runs from August 31 to September 15 with Senegal to face Lithuania (Sept. 1), Australia (Sept. 3) and Canada (Sept. 5) in Group H of the tournament. All first round games will be played in Dongguan, which is on the Pearl River in Southeastern China.
The top two teams from Group G and Group H advance to the second round and are placed into Group L held in Nanjing and Shanghai on Sept. 7 and Sept. 9.
From there, the top two teams in Group L enter the Final Phase (quarterfinals, semifinals and finals) in Beijing, which begins Sept. 10 with the championship game to be held Sept. 15.
Senegal is coming off playing four friendly games in Europe, which included a 96-75 win over Venezuela in Verona, Italy.
