Second Half Surge Lifts UAB to 2-1 Victory Over Milligan

BIRMINGHAM- Two second half goals within a minute of each other lifted UAB past Milligan College in its first exhibition of the season by a score of 2-1.
The Blazers came out firing in the first half and out-shot Milligan College 9-1, but went into the locker room scoreless. The Green and Gold had several opportunities on corner kicks with eight in the first half but could not put any in the back of the net.
In the 56th minute the Buffaloes opened the scoring when Andre Levarity found a loose rebound and knocked it in.
The Blazers responded quickly with back-to-back goals within a minute of each other. The first goal came in the 60th minute when senior Chase Rushing tapped in the eqaulizer off a free kick from sophomore Brooks Rice. A minute later Brooks Stockley sent a rocket of a shot that hit off the right post and landed in the left corner of the net.
"Overall I was pretty pleased considering we only had two days of practice," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "We went really heavy over those two days, we have a lot of heavy legs but there are specific things we worked on defensively that we saw today. There are a number of things we still need to work on but getting a win not having worked on those things feels good."
Nine of UAB's 15 shots were on target, and the Blazers held Milligan College to four shots total.
The Blazers will be back in action next Saturday, Aug. 24 when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the No. 14 Louisville Cardinals in the final match of the preseason.
