BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team welcomes six new faces to the team this season – three freshmen Jahein Spencer, Jalen Benjamin and Jordan Brinson, a junior college transfer – Kassim Nicholson, one former UAB baseball player – Antonio Ralat and one transfer – Rashawn Fredericks.
UABSports.com will provide fans a quick introduction to these new Blazers, with today featuring Benjamin.
Playing at the highest level is nothing new to the Benjamin family. Jalen's father, Ishua, played four seasons at N.C. State, scoring 1,263 career points and was a member of the 1995 ACC All-Rookie Team.
This November, it will be Jalen's turn.
Benjamin signed his National Letter of Intent during the early signing period in November, 2018.
He played his senior season at Meadowcreek in Norcross, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. In his only season with the Mustangs, Benjamin led the team to a 26-6 record (12-1 in Region 7A) and a berth in the championship game of the 7A State Playoffs.
In the championship contest against McEachern, the No.1 ranked team in the nation, Benjamin scored a team-high 19 points.
He finished the season averaging 16.6 points per game and added 3.2 assists per contest as the Mustangs had a final state ranking of No. 4.
Benjamin was named All-State Honorable Mention, All-Metro Second-Team, a Gwinnett Senior All-Star and Gwinnett Daily Post All-County. Additionally, he was named to the Atlanta Tipoff Club's All-Metro Midseason Team.
Benjamin played a pivotal role in his first three years of high school at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, N.C., scoring over 1,500 points.
The 5'10, guard has been extremely successful with his AAU team, Stackhouse Elite. With Stackhouse, he averaged 15.8 points per game and scored 25 points in the championship game at the 2018 Bob Gibbons Tournament. For his efforts, he was named MVP of the Super Six of the event.
