Meet the Blazers: Antonio Ralat

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team welcomes six new faces to the team this season – three freshmen Jahein Spencer, Jalen Benjamin and Jordan Brinson, a junior college transfer – Kassim Nicholson, one former UAB baseball player – Antonio Ralat and one transfer – Rashawn Fredericks.
UABSports.com will provide fans a quick introduction to these new Blazers, with today featuring Ralat.
When you look at the 2019-20 UAB men's basketball roster and wonder who has participated in the most collegiate games, your eye could be drawn to the senior transfer Fredericks who has competed in 101 total contests with stops at Cincinnati and Motlow State. However, the answer is somebody who has logged zero minutes with the men's basketball team, yet has 167 collegiate appearances.
That person is Antonio Ralat. If that name rings a bell, he recently completed his third year on UAB's baseball team.
Two-sport athletes are not uncommon in college, but not many have played both baseball and basketball. Ralat now joins the ranks of Dave Winfield (Minnesota), Bob Gibson (Creighton), Tony Gwynn (San Diego State), Sandy Kofax (Cincinnati), Kenny Lofton (Arizona) and Jackie Robinson (UCLA).
Ralat's journey to UAB began in Delray Beach, Fla. where he played at the prestigious Elev8 Baseball Academy. One of his coaches was 13-year MLB veteran Luis Alicea.
Following his time at Elev8, he started his collegiate baseball career at Palm Beach State in Lake Worth, Fla. where he played one season for the Panthers. In 29 games, Ralat hit .283.
Ralat signed with UAB and joined the Blazers for the 2017 season. He saw action in 138 games, making 115 starts at shortstop.
He finished his first year tying the team-high with 54 games played while hitting .265 and scoring 26 runs. He has a pair of three-hit games coming against Middle Tennessee and Old Dominion.
The following year, he played in 53 contests making 47 starts at shortstop. He added three more three-hit games to his resume while ranking seventh in Conference USA games with 75 assists.
In his final campaign, Ralat boasted a .941 fielding percentage making only three errors in 31 games played.
Ralat has international 3x3 basketball experience when he represented Puerto Rico at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. He led his team to a tie for third place in Group A with a 6-3 record and a berth in the knockout round where Puerto Rico dropped a heartbreaker to Venezuela 20-18.
