MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. – 7.2 strong innings pitched from Tanner Graham and a two home run performance from Carter Pharis lifted the UAB baseball team to a 4-3 game three victory over Charlotte on Senior Day.
UAB (25-27, 10-17 C-USA) is playing its best baseball of the season, having won three straight Conference USA series and will enter the final weekend of league play still in contention for a spot in the C-USA Tournament set for May 22-26 in Biloxi, Miss.
"That was special," head coach Brian Shoop said. "In the final home game for Carter (Pharis) for him to homer twice and have three of our four RBIs, I love that boy. Tanner (Graham) was great in his final home outing, I love that boy. Matthew (Calvert) came in and got out of that jam in the eighth and Austin (Stump) has been really good for us as of late. I am really happy for our guys to get that win, that's 8-of-11 and three conference series win in a row. I am proud of them and happy for them.
"I am really thankful to Lee Gann and Mountain Brook for allowing us to play here because there was no way in the world we would have played at Young Memorial Field. It was really incredible of them to give up their Mothers Day and allow us to play. We are really grateful for that as well."
Pharis' day at the plate included three hits in his first three at bats, accounting for a trio of RBIs and a pair of runs scored. The senior's other multi-home run contest was at Ole Miss earlier in the season.
Jess Davis remained hot, going 2-for-4 to stretch his multi game hit streak to two contests and his hitting streak to five. The freshman also stole a pair of bases. Colton Schultz rounded out the Blazers with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
Graham shined in his final start on the Southside, logging a season high 7.2 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits with a walk and five punch outs. Austin Stump earned his second save in as many games coming into the contest and getting a ground out for the final out.
UAB got on the board in second inning with Pharis' first blast to take a 1-0 lead and never looked back from that moment.
The Green and Gold added their final runs in the third inning when J. Davis led off the frame with a single through the right side. A pair of stolen bases moved him 90-feet away before Ian Ladner drove a sacrifice fly to score J. Davis and make it 2-0. Pharis drove home the second and third runs with his second long ball, a blast over the left centerfield wall to also score Zack Davis who reached on a walk earlier in the inning.
Charlotte (19-29-1, 10-16-1 C-USA) got a run back in the fourth inning with a home run down the right field line to make it 4-1.
The 49ers added a run for the second straight inning in the fifth with a RBI triple to make it a two-run contest.
Charlotte made a final push in the ninth inning scoring a run on a pair of hits, but the threat was not enough as a ground out ended the threat and the game with a 4-3 final score.
UAB hits the road to close the regular season, beginning with its final midweek contest for the 2019 campaign at Jacksonville State on Tuesday night. First pitch between the Blazers and Gamecocks is set for 6 p.m. at Jim Case Stadium.
