BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team begins the final week of the regular season on Tuesday night when it travels to Jacksonville State for its final midweek contest of the 2019 campaign. First pitch between the Blazers and Gamecocks is set for 6 p.m. at Jim Case Stadium.
UAB (25-27, 10-17 C-USA) is coming off of a 2-1 series victory over Charlotte this past weekend to notch its third consecutive Conference USA series victory, something a UAB team has not done since 2014. The Blazers enter the week one of six teams within two games of the eighth and final spot in the C-USA Tournament set for May 22-26 in Biloxi, Miss.
Carter Pharis made the most of his Senior Day on Sunday against the 49ers, blasting two home runs for his second multi-long ball game of the season. The senior is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak that also included a double in game one against Charlotte to move him into a tie for second for most career double baggers (57).
Tyler Tolbert is also in the middle of a hitting streak with his spanning seven games with four multi-knock games included. The second basemen was a force on the base paths against the 49ers last weekend, matching his career best of four stolen bases in game one, while also adding another in the series finale on Sunday. The junior has been instrumental this season to the Green and Gold leading C-USA in stolen bases (131) and eighth nationally in swipes per game (2.5).
Austin Bohannon is scheduled to get the start on the mound Tuesday night, making his second mid-week start in as many games. The Russellville, Ala., native allowed two runs on three with over 3.1 innings pitched in last Tuesday's victory over Auburn on the Plains.
Jacksonville State (30-21, 19-8 OVC) is coming off of a three-game sweep over SIU-Edwardsville last weekend in which the Gamecocks walked off over the Cougars in all three contests. Nic Gaddis leads the Gamecocks' offense, batting .335 with team bests in runs (42), hits (63), home runs (11) and total bases (110).
Left hander Michael Gilliland is scheduled to get the start on the mound for Jacksonville State. The Southpaw carries a 3-1 record with a 6.83 ERA, allowing 22 runs on 21 hits with 25 strikeouts over 27.2 innings of work.
Jacksonville State took the inaugural meeting between the two squads with a 5-3 victory on Feb. 26 at Regions Field.
