Late Sac Fly Lifts UAB Over Marshall 6-5

BIRMINGHAM - Nathan Anthes' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning scored Tyler Tolbert to break a tie and give UAB a 6-5 victory over Marshall on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
"It's nice to win a one run game," said head coach Brian Shoop. "After losing the lead, coming back to win was good for our guys."
With the victory, the Blazers (19-25, 6-15 C-USA) pick up their first Conference USA series win.
"It was also a really good day for Nathan Anthes, driving in the game-winning run," added Shoop. Anthes was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Ian Ladner homered for the third straight contest, driving in three. Antonio Ralat added a pair of hits and an RBI. Jess Davis swiped three bases.
On the hill, starter Tanner Graham went 5.2 inning with five strikeouts. Austin Stump picked up the victory after pitching a scoreless eighth inning and Matthew Calvert recorded the save.
"It was great for Calvert go get back in there and close the game out. I'm really proud of him."
Bryan Callaly suffered the loss for Marshall (23-20, 10-11 C-USA).
UAB got on the board first when Ladner took an 0-1 pitch off the scoreboard in left field with Zack Davis and Colton Schultz aboard.
The Blazers extended its lead to 4-0 in the second inning when Ralat legged out a chopper which scored Anthes.
Marshall would cut the deficit to one run after the Herd put up three runs in the sixth inning.
The Blazers would answered after Blake Johnson singled, advanced to second on a throwing error and scoring on an Anthes single, which made the score 5-3.
The Herd opened the seventh inning with back-to-back walks. The runners advanced to second and third on a sac bunt and were brought home by Raul Cabrera's single which tied the score at 5-5.
In the eighth inning, Tolbert walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. On an 0-2 pitch, Anthes brought him home with the sacrifice to give UAB a 6-5 lead.
Calvert got the first two Herd batters to strike out in the ninth inning. Marshall got three straight singles to load the bases with Geordan Blanton at the plate. One a 1-1 count, he flied to center to end the game.
UAB returns to Young on Wednesday for a weeknight game against Alabama State (25-20). After the contest with the Hornets, the Blazers travel to Miami to face FIU May 3-5.
