UAB Hosts Alabama State to Close Homestand

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team closes its eight game homestand on Wednesday night when it welcomes Alabama State to Young Memorial Field. First pitch between the Blazers and Hornets is schedule for 6:30 p.m.
UAB (19-25, 6-15) is coming off of its first Conference USA series victory over the season taking two of three from Marshall over the past weekend. Ian Ladner sparked the Blazers offense, accounting for five runs on four hits with six RBIs and homered in all three games against the Thundering Herd. The sophomore is batting .290 with a .477 slugging percentage through 37 games this season.
Brothers Zack and Jess Davis headline the UAB offense, bating a combined .309 with 99 hits, including seven home runs, 25 doubles and 65 RBIs. J. Davis ranks second nationally in stolen bases (37), while Z. Davis ranks eighth in C-USA in triples (3).
Alexander Pondick is scheduled to get the start on the mound for the Blazers, getting his fourth career start, but first since March 20 against Alabama A&M. The graduate transfer carries a 6.17 ERA with a 1-1 record over 15 appearances and has allowed 21 runs on 37 hits with 25 strikeouts to just six walks issued.
Alabama State (25-20, 18-5 SWAC) will come to Birmingham on Wednesday night after a Tuesday home mid-week matchup against Troy. The Hornets claimed the East Division of the SWAC for the second consecutive season after their series victory over Jackson State last weekend.
Yamil Pagan leads the Alabama State offense, batting .368 with 61 runs scored on 64 hits, including 13 home runs and four triples. Right handed pitcher Darrius Wright is scheduled to get the start on the mound for the Hornets, boasting a 3-3 record with an 8.00 ERA over nine starts this season.
