Blazers Split Saturday Double Header Against the Roadrunners

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team was unable to keep the momentum from its game one victory over UTSA as the Blazers split Saturday's seven-inning double header. The Blazers took game one 7-3, but fell 4-1 in game two.
The two teams battled through a weather filled weekend as game one on Thursday night was suspended in the middle of the eighth inning due to severe weather in the Birmingham area and game two on Friday was cancelled because of more rain in the forecast, forcing the Saturday double header with teams taking Sunday off for Easter.
"I don't think the weekend scheduled affected us at all," head coach Brian Shoop said. "The first game was a really good team win, nice bounce back. The second game I thought their guy threw a really, really good game. Probably Carter (Pharis') ball and Colton (Schultz) ball on any other day are both home runs, but they hit them into the teeth of the win. You are going to lose games and that game was one that you are going to lose because the kid threw a great game. This one wasn't one that bites you, it's all of the games leading up that we had leads let go, or we didn't expand leads, or had guys in scoring position with a chance to win. The first game was a nice team win, they second game was a really well pitched game by their guy. Nothing more, nothing less."
Jess Davis led the Blazers on the day, being the only player to record hits in both games. In game one he matched his career high in hits (3), while in game two he launched a leadoff solo shot for the first home run of the freshman's career.
Carter Pharis also had a multi-hit game in the first of the twin bill, going 2-for-2 for a run scored, a RBI and a walk.
Game One
UTSA (18-22, 8-10 C-USA) struck in the top of the first inning, converting on a UAB error to take a 1-0 lead.
UAB (17-24, 4-14 C-USA) answered in the bottom of the first inning, taking a lead it would not relinquish. J. Davis, Colton Schultz and Zack Davis all led off the frame with consecutive singles, as Z. Davis' went through the right side, scoring his younger brother and tied the game at one and moved Schultz to third. Pharis followed with a walk to load the bases for Ian Ladner who grounded out, deep enough to score Schultz and give the Blazers a 2-1 lead. Blake Johnson provided the fourth UAB hit of the inning with another single to left field to score Z. Davis and push the Blazers' lead to two. Two batters later Christian Waltman doubled off the wall in left center, scoring Pharis and Johnson and opened UAB's lead to 5-1 after the first inning.
The Roadrunners got a run back in the top of the second inning, stringing together a trio of consecutive hits with the final run scoring a runner to make it a three-run game.
The Blazers final runs of game one came in the bottom of the sixth inning as Schultz drew a one out walk followed by Z. Davis being hit by a pitch. Pharis knocked his second hit of the game with a single through the right side, scoring Schultz and pushing UAB's lead back to four. Z. Davis would come around to score a batter later on a wild pitch for the Blazers' seventh and final run of the game.
In the top of the third inning UTSA plated the game's final run as a batter was struck by a pitch with bases loaded to give the game its final 7-3 score.
Ty Harris (1-1) earned the win for the Blazers, while Tanner Rusk earned his first career save, throwing 4.1 innings and allowed no runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Game Two
The Blazers lone run of game two came in the bottom of the first inning when J. Davis hit his solo shot over the left field wall to give UAB a 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners answered in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs on five hits to take a 2-1 lead and one it would not relinquish.
The game remained a one-run game until the top of the sixth inning when UTSA added some insurance runs, scoring two more runs on just two hits for the game's final 4-1 score.
UAB starter Tanner Graham (3-4) took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on 11 hits with just two strikeouts.
The Blazers take a week off from competition as they prepare for final exams before returning to the diamond April 26 to begin a three-game series against Marshall. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
