BIRMINGHAM– The UAB baseball team returns to the diamond on Friday night when it welcomes Marshall to the Magic City to begin a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m., followed by game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the finale slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Friday's game is Diamond Girl Appreciation Night, which will have a ceremony beginning at 6:25 p.m. On Saturday, the 2012 Conference USA championship team will be honored at 1:50 p.m.
UAB (17-24, 4-14 C-USA) took a break from mid-week action to allow student-athletes to complete their final exams. The Blazers dropped last weekend's series to UTSA in a weather filled three days that saw game one suspended in the middle of the eighth inning and games two and three forced to be a pair of seven-inning contests.
Jess Davis and Blake Johnson provided some offensive spark against the Roadrunners as both launched their first career home run. Johnson, a fifth-year senior, has made his final season his best, batting a career-high .266 with 21 runs on 29 hits and eight extra base knocks and has registered a hit in 19 games played.
Davis has been a catalyst in the Blazers ranking fifth nationally in stolen bases (100) and eighth in stolen bases per game (2.4) as the freshman ranks second individually in stolen bases (34) and third in swipes per game (0.83). Tyler Tolbert is also among the nationally ranks in stolen bases, coming in at ninth (0.79) in bags per game and 11th in total swipes (27).
Zack Davis has led the charge for the majority of the season at the plate for the Green and Gold, holding team bests in batting average (.345), slugging percentage (.549), on-base percentage (.431), RBIs (34) and doubles (13). The junior has recorded 11 multi-hit games this season and has 31 extra-base knocks.
Riley Davis is scheduled to make the start on the mound on Friday for the Blazers, followed by Tyler Gates on Saturday and Tanner Graham on Sunday. R. Davis is making his first career Friday night start after being dominant in mid-week starts, allowing one run on just five hits with five strikeouts and two walks issued over 7.0 innings pitched.
Marshall (22-18, 9-9 C-USA) is coming off of a 5-4 loss to Morehead State on Tuesday night and dropped two of three games last weekend at Louisiana Tech. Shane Hanon leads the Thundering Herd offense, batting .375 with 18 runs scored on 33 hits, including eight doubles, four home runs and a pair of triples.
Joshua Shapiro is scheduled to get the start on the mound on Friday night for Marshall, followed by Wade Martin on Saturday with Sunday's started to be announced later. Shapiro carries a 2.18 ERA and has allowed 18 runs on 39 hits with 29 walks issued and 59 strikeouts.
Tickets to this weekend's action can be purchased online or at the Young Memorial Field Ticket Office. Tickets are $5 for adults or $3 for kids 18 and younger. Please note that the on-site box office is cash only.
Please note that Birmingham Legion FC has a game on Saturday night and will begin charging for parking at 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to use the parking deck and lot off of University Boulevard and 12th Street for parking.
