UAB Splits Friday Double Header at Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB baseball team picked up a 10-8 game one win, but fell 7-3 in game two to Middle Tennessee as the Blazers split the double header on Friday night in Murfreesboro.
UAB (16-20, 3-11 C-USA) will play for its first Conference USA series win of the season and its first series victory in Murfreesboro since 1999 in the finale on Saturday.
Colton Schultz led a trio of Blazers to record hits in both games today, tallying a combined three hits and a trio of runs scored. Zack Davis also registered three hits on the day, including a home run in game one to finish with three RBIs in the first of the twin bill.
Blake Johnson, Tyler Tolbert and Jess Davis all finished with a pair of RBIs in game one, while J. Davis matched his career high in hits (3) and tacked on a stolen base.
Game One
Middle Tennessee got on the scoreboard in the second inning, plating a run on a sacrifice fly to right field to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders busted the game one open an inning later in the third, scoring five runs on four hits with the help of two UAB errors, taking a commanding 6-0 lead.
In the fifth inning Middle Tennessee once again make the Blazers pay for a defensive miscue as the leadoff man reached on an error from Graham Ashcraft. He would come around to score on a wild pitch to push the Blue Raiders' lead to 7-0.
UAB responded in the top of the sixth inning as J. Davis and Schultz strung together back-to-back singles to put two on with no outs for Z. Davis who launched a three-run shot over the right field wall to bring the Blazers within four.
The Blazers took the lead with a big top of the seventh inning. Tolbert led off the frame with a single followed by a triple off the bat of Justin Wiley for the first run. J. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Wiley to pull the Blazers within two. Schultz knocked UAB's third hit of the inning with a single to center field and was followed with a pair of walks to Z. Davis and Pharis before Ian Ladner knocked an infield single, scoring Schultz to cut Middle Tennessee's lead to one. Johnson provided the go ahead runs with a single to right field, plating Z. Davis and Pharis to give UAB an 8-7 lead and cap off a five-run inning.
Scoring continued for the Blazers for the third consecutive inning in the top of the eighth inning as Christian Waltman led off the frame with a double to right field. A sacrifice bunt moved the catcher to third, before J. Davis knocked his third hit of the game with a single to right, scoring Waltman and pushing UAB's lead to 9-7.
The scoring streak continued into the ninth inning as Z. Davis led off the frame with a walk. Two batters a later, a single off the bat of Ladner scored Z. Davis to make it a 10-7 game.
The Blue Raiders made a final push in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run on a hit with another UAB error, but the comeback fell short, giving the Blazers the victory.
Ashcraft (2-3) earned the win, going 6.0 inning and allowed seven runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Matthew Calvert was credited with the save, the senior's first on the season, after throwing 2.1 innings and allowed one run on a pair of hits with two strikeouts.
Game Two
UAB wasted no time scoring in game two, getting on the board in the first inning as J. Davis led off the game with a walk. A wild pitch and a stolen base moved the freshman to third before his older brother Z. Davis hit an infield single to score him and give UAB a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers added to their lead in the third inning as Schultz hit a two out triple before Pharis would provide the second UAB hit of the inning with a single through the left side, scoring Schultz and giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
In the home half of the third inning Middle Tennessee scored three runs on two hits highlighted by a three-run home run to lead 3-2.
UAB knotted the game at three in the fifth inning as Ladner followed Pharis' double with one of his own, scoring Pharis to make it a 3-3 game.
Middle Tennessee busted the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four runs on three hits with a UAB error to make it a 7-3 contest and secure the game two victory.
Cole Whitman (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Blazers, allowing one run on one hit with a walk over 0.0 innings pitched.
