MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB baseball team was unable to clinch the series when it fell 9-2 in game three at Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
UAB (16-21, 3-12 C-USA) completes its four-game road trip with a 2-2 record, tallying wins over Troy and a game one victory over the Blue Raiders.
"It was a combination of things," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We tied in hits, we both had 12 and we actually had three more hits than they did until the eighth inning. But 11 of our 12 hits came with runners not in scoring position so we had no meaningful hits and we had all kinds of opportunities to score. We had two infield errors to lead off innings which both led to runs and we didn't pitch very well again. We gave up 24 runs on the weekend and it's not very good. We really kind of failed in all three areas today."
UAB knocked six doubles, setting a season high. Zack Davis was responsible for two of them, while Blake Johnson, Nathan Anthes, Justin Wiley and Tyler Tolbert added the remaining four.
Colton Schultz and Wiley both recorded three hits to lead the Blazers at the plate offensively. Zack Davis also added a pair of hits as all three registered hits in every game in the series.
Tanner Graham (3-3) took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs on nine hits with a walk and just one strikeout. The senior entered the start in the midst of a 10.2-inning streak of having not allowed a run.
Middle Tennessee (15-21, 9-6 C-USA) got on the board in the first inning, scoring three runs on a pair of hits to take a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders added onto their lead in the second inning, making UAB pay for a leadoff error. Two batters later a sacrifice fly was hit to deep center field, scoring the leadoff hitter and making it a 3-0 game.
UAB grabbed its first run in the top of the third inning after Tolbert led off the frame with a double to left center field before a single from Jess Davis advanced Tolbert to third. J. Davis bolted to second on the following pitch, distracting the defense and allowing Tolbert to score from third to make it a 3-1 game.
Middle Tennessee tacked on three runs in the fifth inning, stringing together consecutive doubles to push its lead to six.
The Blazers got a run back in the sixth inning as Johnson drove a double to left field. Two batters later, Anthes doubled off the wall in left center field to score Johnson and make it a 7-2 contest.
The Blue Raiders added to their lead in their final at bat in the eighth, scoring two more runs on three hits as UAB committed its third error of the contest, to seal the game at 9-2.
UAB returns to Birmingham on Tuesday night when it starts an eight game homestand, beginning with Alabama at Regions Field. First pitch between the Blazers and Crimson Tide is set for 6:30 p.m.
Single game tickets can be purchased online or at the box office one hour prior to first pitch for all eight games.
