BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team closes its four-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Murfreesboro for a three-game series at Middle Tennessee. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., followed by game two on Saturday at 4 p.m., with the series finale slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
UAB (15-19, 2-10 C-USA) is coming off of a 7-6, 10-inning victory at Troy on Tuesday night as Jim Jeffries hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th inning, while Sylvester Toe fanned a career high five batters over 1.2 innings of work.
Jess Davis swiped four bases in the victory over the Trojans to record his fifth game this season with three or more stolen bases. The freshman enters the weekend leading the nation in stolen bases (32) and ranks second in swipes per game (0.9). As a team, UAB ranks fifth in the NCAA in stolen bases (86) and seventh in stolen bases per game (2.5).
Colton Schultz has been one of the most consistent batters in the UAB lineup, hitting out of the third spot in the batting order. The junior has hit safely in 27 games this season and enters the weekend on a four-game hitting streak, including tallying a pair of multi-hit contests against Old Dominion last weekend.
In Conference USA play Carter Pharis has proven his ability to swing the bat, leading the team in average (.349), hits (15), RBI (10) and on-base percentage (.481). The Trussville native has recorded a hit in nine league contests this season and, like Schultz, enters the weekend on a hitting streak spanning three contests.
Graham Ashcraft is schedule to make his eighth start of the season on Friday, followed by Tanner Rusk on Saturday and Tanner Graham on Sunday. Ashcraft is the staff leader in strikeouts (41) and ERA (3.43). Rusk leads UAB arms in innings pitched (39.2) and is holding opponents to just a .261 batting average against him. Graham has been hot as of late, having not allowed a run in his last 10.2 innings pitched. The senior will make his second Sunday start after holding Old Dominion to no runs on just five hits over 7.0 innings in the no decision last weekend.
Middle Tennessee (13-20, 7-5 C-USA) lost both of its midweek contests this week, but is coming off of a home sweep of WKU last weekend in league play. Aaron Antonini leads the Blue Raiders' offense, batting .317 with 25 runs scored on 40 hits with nine doubles and six home runs.
Fans looking to make the short trip up I-65 to Murfreesboro can purchase tickets online or at the Reese Smith Jr. Field Ticket Office. General admission tickets are $6 or fans can purchase reserved chair back seats for $10.
Following the series at Middle Tennessee the Blazers return to Birmingham to begin an eight-game homestand. The stint begins on Tuesday, April 16 when UAB hosts Alabama at Regions Field with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
