Men's Basketball Defeats First Place Old Dominion 64-50

BIRMINGHAM – Lewis Sullivan and Jalen Perry combined for 36 points and 15 rebounds as UAB defeated first place Old Dominion 64-50 on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Tavin Lovan added 11 points and Jeremiah Bell 10 in the win. Makhtar Gueye pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds for the Blazers (18-13, 10-8 C-USA).
Ahmad Caver scored a game-high 21 points for ODU (23-8, 13-5 C-USA).
The 1sthalf started off with two ties and six lead changes in the game's first nine minutes. A 3-pointer by Xavier Green gave the Monarchs a 13-11 lead at the 11:05 mark, which grew to six points with 7:35 remaining.
UAB would answer with a 14-6 run over the next 4:28 to recapture the lead at 29-27 at 3:07. The lead would switch hands twice in the next two possessions before Bell's jumper at 2:22 put the Blazers ahead for good. Perry's alley-oop to Zack Bryant closed out the 1sthalf scoring with UAB leading 37-32.
ODU had a chance to tie the contest midway through the 2nd half but Caver missed the and-1 which kept UAB ahead 45-44. The Blazers defense held the Monarchs to one field goal over the next 5:23 and built a double-digit lead capped by Bell's 3-pointer that made the score 58-48 with 4:20 remaining.
The Blazers held C-USA's sixth leading scorer B.J. Stith to seven pointson 3-of-14 shooting, 11 below his season average. UAB won the battle of the boards 41-35 and had 32 points in the paint to ODU's 18.
