UAB Advances to C-USA Quarterfinals After 70-61 Victory over MT

FRISCO, Texas – Four players scored in double-figures in UAB's 70-61 victory over Middle Tennessee in the First Round of the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday night at the Ford Center.
Lewis Sullivan led the Blazers (19-13) with 17 points. Zack Bryant added 15, Jalen Perry 14 and Jeremiah Bell 12 in the win.
Donovan Sims had a game-high 22 for the Blue Raiders (11-21). Karl Gamble had a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Blazers led for the majority of the 1st half, taking a 9-8 lead on Perry's jumper at 16:54. Tyreek Scott-Grayson's and-one made the score 27-18 and gave UAB its largest lead of the half at nine points with 8:59 left. However, MT responded with a 13-3 run capped by Gamble's dunk that gave the Blue Raiders a 31-30 lead at 3:22. The Blazers would hit three foul shots on their next two scoring possessions to regain the lead before Gamble's 3-pointer sent the game into halftime with MT leading 34-33.
Perry scored his 14th points of the game on a turn-around jumper to open the 2nd half scoring. Bryant followed with a dunk and Sullivan a driving layup to put UAB up 39-34, forcing a Middle Tennessee timeout at 18:25.
Bryant's jumper at 13:06 gave the Blazers their first double-digit lead of the game at 53-43. The lead would get to 15 points at 8:26 on Scott-Grayson's foul shot. However, MT would go on an 11-0 over run the next 5:30 to get within four points of tying the contest at 60-56. Bell's 3-ball ended UAB's six minutes scoring draught, making it a two-possession game the rest of the way.
UAB's bench outscored the Blue Raiders 23-4, and the Blazers were also 17-of-23 from the free throw line.
Up next the Blazers will face #4 seed UTSA (17-14) Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
