BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team will hit the road again this weekend for its conference-opening series, traveling to San Antonio, Texas, to take on UTSA. The Blazers will square off against the Roadrunners in a doubleheader on Saturday, then conclude the series on Sunday. The first pitch of the series is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 3:30 p.m. start for game two. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
UAB (8-12) is coming off a tough stretch heading into the matchup after dropping a midweek game to undefeated and sixth-ranked Alabama, then falling in two pairs of contests against Georgia and Virginia Tech at the Bulldog Classic, hosted by Georgia in Athens, Ga., over the weekend.
There are currently four Blazers batting over .350 in sophomore catcher Sarah Crawford (.351), freshman outfielder Faith Hegh (.360), sophomore outfielder Jenna Olszewski (.361) and junior outfielder Natalie Erwin (.400). Olzewski leads the squad in hits with 22 on the season, including three triples and 38 total bases to go with a .623 slugging percentage. Freshman pitcher Sarah Cespedes leads UAB in the circle, going 3-2 on the year with a 4.42 ERA.
UTSA (9-11) will host the Blazers after experiencing a similar slide. The Roadrunners were unable to notch a victory in the Judi Garman Classic, hosted by Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., as they were knocked off by host No. 7 Tennessee, No. 22 Auburn, CSUN and Fresno State. UTSA was most recently defeated by Houston Baptist, 7-0, on the road on Wednesday.
Junior outfielder Celeste Loughman leads the Roadrunners at the plate with a .379 batting average, piling up 25 hits and 10 RBI while also swiping seven bags this season. Sophomore pitcher Clarissa Hernandez has been UTSA's ace this season, going 3-3 with a 2.50 ERA to date.
Both sides will look to gain an edge on the opposing team as the all-time series between the two is tied at four series wins each. The Blazers and Roadrunners also have seven wins over each other in the brief history of the two squads. UAB took the last series and meeting of the two sides at home in Birmingham last season, winning the series, 2-1, and the most recent contest, 10-4, on April 29, 2018, at Mary Bowers Field.
Next up for the Blazers will be a midweek contest at home against crosstown opponent Samford on Wednesday, March 13, at 6 p.m. at Mary Bowers Field.
General admission tickets are on sale for $5 for adults and $3 for youth and chairback seats are available for $10 for adults and $6 for youth. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, online at uabsports.com, or by calling the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-UAB1.
