BIRMINGHAM – Following a gritty win over Jacksonville State in a midweek contest on Wednesday, the UAB softball team will host UTEP in a weekend series at Mary Bowers Field beginning Saturday with a doubleheader and concluding with the series capper on Sunday. On Saturday, game one is slated for 3 p.m., and game two is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The series topper is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All games over the weekend will be broadcasted on ESPN+ along with the usual Conference USA stream and live stats by Sidearm.
Saturday's doubleheader will be UAB's Bark in the Park promotion, where fans are allowed to bring their dogs to the game. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society will also be in attendance for potential adoptions. Waivers for dogs will be located near the front entrance. There will also be pools and bowls of water in the grassy area behind the first base line for the dogs. Signage will be located in and behind the stands for dog-friendly areas and cleanup stations. Sunday will be team day as youth teams can get in free with a roster submission by noon on Friday. In-game promotions both days through Smoothie King, Fired Up and the Conference USA will continue as usual.
UAB (12-19, 2-7 C-USA) strides into the contest after taking down Jacksonville State behind an eight-run sixth inning, ultimately winning the game, 9-3, on Wednesday. The Blazers got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 1-0 lead, but the Gamecocks responded in the top of the fifth with three runs of their own to climb on top. After a pair of UAB hits in the bottom of the sixth, Jacksonville State switched pitchers, and the Blazers took control the rest of the way. UAB knocked six singles, reached on four walks and freshman infielder Sierra Frazier hammered a three-RBI bomb to compile eight runs in the inning and ice the game.
The Blazers have continued to hold some of the best batting numbers in the conference. UAB has led the conference in batting average and doubles per game the past few weeks, currently ranking No. 46 in the nation in batting average at .304 and fourth in the country in doubles per game at 1.90 per game.
Individually, freshman outfielder Faith Hegh leads the conference and is ranked No. 48 in the NCAA in doubles per game at 0.36. Going a step further, sophomore outfielder Jenna Olszewski ranks second in the conference and 12th in the country in triples with four on the season. Junior infielder Dylinn Stancil has proved to be a headache for opposing pitchers as well, coming in as the second most difficult player to strike out in the conference for her current numbers at the plate, also ranking No. 30 in the nation in the category.
UTEP (9-22, 3-6 C-USA) heads to Mary Bowers Field after taking one of three from Southern Miss at home last weekend. The Miners fell 11-3 in game one of a doubleheader, but bounced back in game two with a 7-6 victory on Saturday. The Golden Eagles then clinched the series in the finale with a 13-2 win on Sunday. UTEP's lone conference-series win came on its first opportunity as the Miners took two of three from Charlotte at home.
UTEP brings to town potent bats of its own as the Miners lead the conference in home runs per game and slugging percentage. UTEP is currently No. 34 in the NCAA in home runs per game at 1.10 and ranks 35th in the country in slugging percentage at 0.481.
Senior infielder Cortney Smith brings power to the plate for UTEP and boasts the same individual home run rankings as the team, sitting atop the conference and ranking 34th in the nation in home runs with nine on the season. Freshman utility player Kasey Flores leads the Miner offense overall and also has a conference leading mark, ranking No. 83 in the nation as well in total bases with 63 on the year. Flores is second in the conference in batting average at .404, slugging percentage at .708 and hits with 36 to date. Senior pitcher Julia Wright has had the most success for the Miners as a pitcher, posting a 6-9 record with a 6.62 ERA and 44 strikeouts on the season.
In the all-time series between the two, UAB currently holds a commanding 26-10 lead. UTEP took the most recent matchup last season in a barnburner with a 16-13 win, but UAB had already clinched the series with 11-0 and 8-6 wins the day before in El Paso, Texas. Prior to the final contest between the two, the Blazers had won 14 straight games dating back to the 2013 season and seven straight series going further to the 2011 season.
UAB will next travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on No. 4 Alabama (34-1, 5-1 SEC) for a midweek battle on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Rhoads Stadium.
