UAB (9-3) has opened the 2019 campaign with three consecutive series wins, marking the first time the Blazers have opened the season with a trio of straight series wins since 2015.
"Today was good," head coach Brian Shoop said. "After a five hour, 13 inning disappointment last night it was good to come back tonight and get two, especially after going down 4-0 in game one. It was a good day, I am proud of them and happy for them."
Colton Schultz once again led the Blazers offensively, going a combined 5-for-9 with a pair of hits in game one and a career best three hits in game three. The three-hole hitter also combined for six RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while being one-of-two UAB hitters to record a RBI in both contests.
"Colton had another big, big day," Shoop said.
Blake Johnson wrapped up a successful weekend at the plate with three hits and a career high four RBIs in game one, while also adding a run scored. The senior tacked on another run and an additional RBI in game two.
"I was really, really happy for Blake Johnson," Shoop said. "I am so happy for Blake who does everything right, to come in and have a big day. He had a great day and that three run double in the first game was the big hit of the day."
Zack Davis rattled off a career high four hits in game one, becoming the first Blazer to have a quartet of hits in a game since Carter Pharis on March 12, 2017. He also added three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Jess Davis added a pair of hits in game one and a trio of runs in game two, reaching base on two walks and a hit by pitch. The freshman also added a combined five stolen bases with three in game one and two more in the day's finale.
J Paul Fullerton also shined at the plate, combining for a 5-for-8 day with two RBIs and a run scored.
On the mound Austin Bohannon earned his first career win in game one, tossing 1.2 innings and allowed no runs on one hit, being the only Blazer arm to not surrender a run in the first game of the double header.
Tanner Rusk had a dominant outing in game two as the starter went a career high 6.0 innings and allowed no runs on one hit with just three walks and 10 strikeouts. Rusk is the first UAB pitcher to fan 10 hitters since Ryan Ruggles did it at Florida Atlantic on April 29, 2018. Tyler O'Clair closed the game, logging 3.0 inning with one run scored on three hits and a strikeout.
"It was great to get a really strong start from one of our starters," Shoop said. "Rusk was really good and that is super encouraging and then Tyler finished it off good for us."
