BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team begins a four game road stretch on Tuesday afternoon when it travels to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama. First pitch between the Blazers and Crimson Tide is set for 3 p.m.
UAB (9-3, 0-0 C-USA) is coming off of its third consecutive series win as it took two of three from Radford. The Blazers swept Saturday's double header behind a 10 strikeout performance in game two from Tanner Rusk.
The Blazers' pitching staff is holding opponents to just a .236 batting average, the third best in C-USA, while boasting a combined 3.53 ERA good for the fourth lowest in the conference. Getting a hit off of Tanner Graham has proven to be difficult as the senior leads C-USA in batting average against (.140). Graham made history with his Friday night start against the Highlanders, joining UAB's top-10 list for career starts (35).
Graham Ashcraft is set to get the start on the bump in Tuscaloosa. The redshirt sophomore has made three appearances this season with a pair of starts. In his first career start the right hander went 5.2 innings and allowed no runs on no hits with seven strikeouts and just two walks at No. 9 Mississippi State.
UAB has opened the season on a tear at the plate, ranking first in the league in runs (98), and RBI (91). Additionally, the Blazers rank second in batting average (.302), on-base percentage (.398), hits (122) and doubles (26). On the base paths the Green and Gold rank first nationally in stolen bases (40) and third in swipes per game (3.3).
Colton Schultz leads the Blazers at the plate with the second best batting average in the league (.435), while leading the league in runs (14), hits (20) and RBIs (18). The Huntsville native has seven multi-hit games this season, matching his career high of three hits in three contests and has blasted a pair of home runs.
Freshman Jess Davis has made an immediate impact for the Green and Gold, ranking first nationally in stolen bases per game (1.7) and stolen bases (20). The center fielder is batting .333 with 15 hits, four for extra bases and 12 RBIs.
Alabama (10-2) is in the midst of a six game winning streak, including going a perfect 5-0 last week with two wins over North Alabama and a series sweep at South Alabama.
Kolby Robinson leads the Crimson Tide offense, batting .529 with 18 hits with a pair of doubles. The infielder boasts a .588 slugging percentage and has recorded a hit in seven of eight contests he has played in.
Garret Rukes is set to get the start on the mound for Alabama. Rukes is making his fourth appearance this season but first start. The redshirt sophomore carries a 1.59 ERA over 5.2 innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
