BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Hilltoppers completed the three game on Sunday afternoon as WKU defeated the UAB baseball team 5-3 at Nick Denes Field.
UAB (10-10, 0-3) was swept in the opening weekend of Conference USA play for the first time since an 0-3 weekend at Middle Tennessee in 2015.
Carter Pharis led the UAB offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, including a double. Jess Davis, Zack Davis and Blake Johnson also added a pair of hits for the Green and Gold, while J. Davis also had a RBI.
Thomas Johns added the other lone RBI for the day with a solo home run, his second long shot of the season and seventh of the junior's career.
Tyler O'Clair (1-2) took the loss for the Blazers on the mound, allowing three runs on three hits with a pair of walks, while not recording an out.
WKU (9-9, 3-0 C-USA) took a lead in the bottom of the first inning as it strung together three consecutive hits with the final one being a three run home run to left center field, giving the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers made it a two-run game in the top of the third inning after Johns led off the frame with his solo shot. Johnson followed Johns with his first hit of the day and was driven around two batters later as J. Davis doubled into left center field to make it a 3-2 contest.
The Hilltoppers added a run back in the home half of the third inning, scoring the leadoff hitter with a double down the left field line to push their lead to 4-2.
The fifth and final WKU run came across the board an inning later in the fourth as Richard Constantine hit a two out single through the left side, pushing the Hilltoppers' lead to 5-2.
UAB made its final push in the top of the eighth inning after Pharis led off the frame with a double to left field. The senior reached third on a WKU error and then came around to score as Christian Waltman grounded into a double play, deep enough to score Pharis to give the game its final 5-3 score.
UAB returns to Regions Field on Tuesday, March 19 to begin a four-game homestand, beginning with No. 17 Auburn. First pitch between the Blazers and Tigers is set for 6:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets to the game online or at the Regions Field Ticket Office.
