FLORENCE, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team rallied to defeat North Alabama 4-3 on Sunday Afternoon in Florence to notch its fifth win of the season.
The Blazers (5-9) lost the doubles point, but stormed back to win four singles matches to claim the 4-3 victory.
UAB started the match with a doubles victory on court one as Marlene Herrmann and Alexandra Shchipakina improved their record to 8-4 together with a 6-4 victory over UNA's Arroyo/Andrews. The Lions though, won on court two 6-4 to earn the doubles point as UAB was unable to field a third team.
Moving to singles, UNA gained a 3-0 lead with a win by default on court six (no player), and a victory on court five as Hana Sisirak had to retire in the first set.
The Blazers though, fought back and earned their first point on court one when Herrmann's opponent Claudia Arroyo retired in the second set with Herrmann leading 6-3, 1-0.
Court three saw UAB's Dominika Hrabalova cruise to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Nina Linke, and the Blazers evened the match at 3-3 with a court two victory for Shchipakina over Payton Andrews in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.
With all eyes on Megan Bertrands playing fourth singles, the sophomore dominated the third and decisive set over Claire DeGeorge for a 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 victory which secured the team win.
