BIRMINGHAM – Several firsts were checked off the list Friday night at Mary Bowers Field as the Blazers' offense lit up the scoreboard, beating Wright State 12-4.
Freshman Sarah Cespedes made her collegiate debut in the circle against the Raiders and picked up her first career win, tossing four innings and racking up five strikeouts. The righty finished the night allowing four runs on five hits.
The game was back-and-forth in the early going with Wright State getting on the board in the top half of the first. The Raiders used a leadoff single from Meredith Keel followed by a walk and back-to-back ground outs to advance Keel around to score.
Destini England fueled the Blazer response with a leadoff single of her own and some aggressive base running. Dylinn Stancil hit behind England and moved her to second but England raced around and headed for third and beat the throw from first as she slid safely into third.
Faith Hegh drove Enlgand home with an RBI double and later scored on an error.
Freshman Sadie Frazier got the bottom of the second started for UAB and launched a solo home run to left, the first homer of her career, in her first collegiate plate appearance. The Green and Gold kept on with the attack in the second as Ashton Clem singled and scored after being driven home by Stancil.
With UAB leading 4-1 in the top half of the third, Wright State answered back with two runs of its own to cut the Blazer lead down to one. It didn't take long for UAB to respond as it put up two more runs in the bottom half of the third, pushing the lead back out to 6-3.
Wright State (0-2) scored one more time in the fourth but then the bats fell silent and the rest of the damage came from the Blazers.
UAB (1-1) got on the board in the fifth as Jenna Olszewski hit a one-out triple and then scored on the play after the third baseman was unable to field the throw from right cleanly. In the sixth, the Blazers blew the doors open.
Stancil hit a one-out single up the middle and was followed up by Hegh and Sierra Frazier who singled and reached on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch brought Stancil home and moved Hegh and Sierra Frazier to second and third.
Sarah Crawford drew a walk to again load the bases and Rachel Owens came through with a two-RBI single to right, scoring Sierra Frazier and Hegh. Olszewski doubled to right center, driving home Crawford and Clem singled to right to score Owens and end the game early as the Blazers run ruled Wright State, 12-4.
The win gives first-year head coach Jimmy Kolaitis his first career victory.
