AUBURN, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team gave No. 26 Auburn all it could handle, but ultimately fell short to the Tigers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Blazers won three singles matches, but Auburn won in doubles which proved to be the decisive point in the match.
In doubles, Auburn's court two tandem of Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith defeated UAB's duo of Jana Hecking and Dominika Hrabalova 6-2. On court one, the Blazers' team of Marlene Herrmann and Alexandra Shchipakina gave the nation's 14th ranked duo of Taylor Russo and Sophia Graver a fight until the end, but the Tigers narrowly defeated UAB 6-4 to secure the point.
Despite the doubles point already have been decided, UAB's court three duo of Sophie Dodds and Hana Sisrak topped Auburn's Yu Chen and Lindsay Song, 6-3.
Auburn went ahead 3-0 in the match by winning in singles on courts three and one in straight sets, but Hecking gave UAB its first point by defeating Auburn's Taylor Russo, 6-4, 6-0.
The Tigers then secured the team victory by winning on court five, but the Blazer were victorious on courts two and six, bringing the final score to 4-3.
Court two saw Shchipakina defeat Auburn's Sophia Graver in a tie break, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, while Sisirak topped Lindsay Song 6-4, 6-2 on court six.
The Blazers return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they host South Alabama at George Ward Park. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
