BIRMINGHAM – Looking for its third consecutive weekend series sweep, the UAB baseball team welcomes Radford to Regions Field for a three game series, beginning Friday March 1 at 4 p.m. Games two and three are slated for Saturday and Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. for both contests.
UAB (7-2, 0-0 C-USA) is coming off a pair of midweek games that included a 5-3 home loss to Jacksonville State, but a 10-6 road victory at Alabama State on Wednesday night. In the win at Alabama State the Blazers combined for six extra hits, highlighted by a triple off the bat of Colton Schultz and a home run from Zack Davis.
Schultz, the reigning Conference USA Hitter of the Week, has been hot offensively to begin the season, leading the NCAA in runs (12) and ranks third in RBIs (11) and hits (14) and fifth in batting average (.438). The Huntsville, Ala., native has five multi-hit contests this season, including matching his career in hits (3) for the second time in the win at Alabama State.
The power for the Green and Gold has come from catcher J Paul Fullerton who ranks second nationally in home runs (2) and RBIs (14). In seven starts this season, Fullerton has recorded four multi-RBI games, including a 2-for-2 game with two runs scored and three RBIs in the Blazers' 20-6 win over Holy Cross (Feb. 23).
Tanner Graham is set his 35th career start on Friday when the senior takes the mound against Radford, moving him into the top-10 in program history for career starts. The Killen, Ala., native has been lights out so far, boasting a 2-0 record in two appearances out of the bullpen and has allowed no runs on just two hits allowed with nine combined strikeouts to one walk issued.
Radford (2-5, 0-0 Big South) is coming off consecutive losses at Wofford and an 8-7 walkoff loss at Virginia Tech on Wednesday night. The Highlanders are hitting a combined .243 on the season with 56 runs scored on 55 hits with 14 home runs and eight doubles. On the mound, Radford holds a mere 6.44 ERA with 48 runs scored on 77 hits through just seven games.
