Blazers Fall In Extras In Game One

UAB (7-3) fell in game one of a series for the first time this season even though it scored five runs over the first five innings.
"I am tired, it's past my bedtime," head coach Brian Shoop said. "There is disappointing things in it, we went 10 innings and only got one run even though we had a great start against a really good arm, Radford's first guy I thought was really good. We did get the winning run 90-feet away in the eighth, ninth and 10th inning so we were pretty close to ending it three innings in a row."
Austin Triplett, Zack Davis and Blake Johnson led UAB with two hits each, while Triplett finished with a game high three RBIs and added a pair of runs scored. For Johnson it was fifth career multi-hit game and first of the season in the senior's first start of the year.
On the mound Tanner Graham made history, making his 35th career start, moving him into a tie for 10th most starts in program history. The senior went a season high 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout and a walk.
Matthew Calvert and Austin Stump pitched in relief. Calvert went 3.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with a season best four strikeouts. Stump lasted a career best 2.2 innings, giving up no runs on no hits with just one walk and two strikeouts.
"I thought Matthew Calvert and Austin Stump were just fantastic in the pen and that is encouraging," Shoop said.
UAB struck in the bottom of the first inning as Jess Davis was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. One pitch later Triplett launched a shot over the right left field wall to give the Blazers a 2-0 advantage.
Johnson led off the second inning with a double into centerfield and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. J. Davis hit a ground out to the right side deep enough to score Johnson, pushing UAB's lead to three. Triplett knocked his second hit in as many at bats to continue the inning and then scored on a Carter Pharis single down the left field line as the Blazers led 4-0.
Radford cut the UAB lead to two in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs on three hits, making the contest 4-2.
The Blazers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Pharis reached on a one out walk. A failed pickoff attempt followed by a throwing error on the pitcher that moved him to third before Zack Davis singled into center field, giving UAB a 5-2 advantage.
An inning later, Radford scored three runs on as many hits highlighted by a two run single into left field, tying the game at 5-5.
The game remained tied at five until the top of the 13th inning when the Highlanders hit a one out triple down the right field line and then the ensuing batter hit a home run to make the game 7-5. A two-out single scored the eighth and final Radford run of the game.
UAB attempted to come back in the bottom of the 13th inning as Keegan Morrow was struck by a pitch to lead off the inning. A wild pitch moved Morrow to third base before a single off the bat of J. Davis advanced Morrow 90 more feet. Triplett grounded out to the right side, deep enough to score Morrow and cut the Radford lead to one. Schultz plated the final run of the game with a single to right field, scoring J. Davis but it was not enough as a pair of fly outs ended the game and the threat.
"When you lose a 13 inning game really those games are invaluable," Shoop said. "You can't create that in practice, the high stress and moments that the kids to participate in and for the most part we did a pretty good job with it. It was one of those games that could have gone either and we'll try to sleep fast and get back after it at 1 p.m. tomorrow."
UAB and Radford close the series on Saturday when the squads face off in a double header, beginning at 1 p.m. Game two will begin approximately 40 minutes after and both games are at Regions Field.
