Women’s Tennis Falls to Samford, 4-1

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's tennis team fell to crosstown rival Samford 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
The Blazers (3-6) started the match off by winning the doubles point, but Samford (5-4) stormed back to win on singles courts 1-3 and on six by default.
In doubles, UAB's Marlene Herrmann and Alexandra Shchipakina blanked Elsa Pool and Natalia De Ugarte 6-0, followed by Jana Hecking and Dominika Hrabalova topping Grace Jennings and Mary Kathrine Lewis 6-4 to secure the doubles point.
However, Samford rallied to win the match in singles. On court one, Herrmann fell to Samford's Grace Jennings 6-2, 6-4. Court two also went in favor of the Bulldogs as Pool defeated Shchipakina 7-6, 6-2.
UAB had to forfeit court six, and the Bulldogs then secured the match on court three when De Ugarte defeated Hecking in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Blazers are back in action this Sunday when UAB hosts Tulane at George Ward Park. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
