BIRMINGHAM- A goal in the 84th minute of play lifted Florida Atlantic over UAB by a score of 1-0 in the final home match of the season for the Blazers.
Both teams got off to slow starts with the first shot of the game from either side coming at the 14-minute mark from FAU.
Nathaniel St. Louis had two scoring opportunities before the end of the half but FAU keeper Hagay Jalon came up with two big saves to keep the Blazers off the board. The two teams would go into half scoreless with three shots a piece.
FAU (6-7-1, 2-4-0) found the game winner with six minutes remaining in the match. In the 84th minute Alex Alexis found some space on the left side of the field and squeezed the ball in to Jean Paul Rafols in the box who finished it into the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead.
UAB (3-11-2, 1-4-1) had multiple chances at an equalizer in the closing minutes of the match but could not convert.
"I thought the guys fought hard all night long," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "At the end of the day this game is about finishing your chances and limiting your opponents. Unfortunately, we didn't finish the job inside the box. We have to go back to the drawing board and prepare for a match with the season on the line."
The Blazers drop into last place in the conference with the loss and now face a must win situation against Kentucky next week in order to have a chance to advance to the conference tournament pending the results of the Old Dominion and South Carolina matches.
UAB will travel to Lexington, Ky. to face off against Kentucky in the final regular season match of the season next Friday at 6 p.m.
