LEXINGTON, Ky.- The 2019 UAB men's soccer season comes to a close after a shutout loss to No. 16 Kentucky Friday night.
The Wildcats outshot the Blazers 20-1 on the night, the first time the Blazers have been held to one shot in a game all season.
UAB (3-12-2, 1-5-1) kept the Wildcats off the board in the first half holding steady on defense to go into halftime tied at 0-0. Grayson Dupont recorded the lone shot for UAB in the 29th minute.
Kentucky (11-3-3, 4-2-1) got on the board in the 50th minute of play as Jansen Wilson knocked in a ball from Daniel Evans to put the Wildcats up 1-0. In the 67th minute Kalil ElMedkhar extended the UK lead to 2-0 finishing a ball from Jason Reyes.
Of the Wildcats 20 shots, six were on goal as senior keeper Julian Mehl made four saves in net for the Blazers.
With the loss UAB's season comes to an end as they fail to qualify for the C-USA tournament.
"The boys deserve a lot of credit for continuing to push on when things did not go our way this year," said head coach Jeff Kinney.
"I truly appreciate the seniors and the leadership they showed throughout the season. There is no doubt in my mind that they have just played a huge part in laying the foundation for this program to move forward. I am extremely grateful for that. There is no question these young men will be extremely successful in their career choices.
"For the rest of us, we definitely have our work cut out for us and that starts now."
The Blazers end the season with 19 goals from 12 different players including Blake White's team high four goals.
Mehl finished the season with 44 saves in 11 starts for UAB, recording one shutout against South Carolina on Oct. 12.
Donovan Watson and Krenar Krasniqi were the only players to start every game and recorded the most minutes for the Blazers in the UAB backline.
Grayson Dupont, Joseph Buete and Aodhán O'Hara each tallied two goals on the season. Krasniqi, Kevin Wallace, Nathaniel St. Louis, Chandler Shirley, Teodor Thorvaldsen, Brandon Core, Trey Nelson and Jake Futrell each scored one goal.
