UAB Finishes in Fourth Place at Vern Stallings Invitational

BIRMINGHAM- The No. 19 Blazers recorded a 7-6 record over the weekend, to finish in fourth place at the Vern Stallings Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
The Blazers began the competition on Friday with five baker matches. UAB started with impressive wins against No. 8 North Carolina A&T (1022-959) and Texas Southern (1049-825). After winning their first two games, the Blazers lost three consecutive matches to finish the day to No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore (1019-983), No. 17 Louisiana Tech (1040-1006), and No. 21 Mount Saint Mary's (987-845). UAB were 2-3 going into the second day of competition.
Although the first day of competition did not go the Blazers' way, they put it all behind them and came out on the second day of competition on fire. UAB finished 4-1 for the day. The Blazers started the traditional match day with a 1039-877 win against Delaware State. UAB would continue to light up the competition with back-to-back wins against Prairie View A&M (1036-892) and Coppin State (1008-825). The Blazers would lose the next match to Howard (993-932) but finish the day strong with a 908-869 win over Tusculum. UAB was in fourth place heading into the last day of competition.
On Sunday, the Blazers had another traditional match against Lincoln before the bracket round. UAB picked up a 914-911 nail-biting win to go into the next round with their heads held high. The Blazers would lose to No. 8 North Carolina A&T 4-1 (201-201, 203-206, 154-188, 182-217, and 140-159) to play for third or fourth place at best. UAB would lose a hard-fought match to Mount Saint Mary's 4-3 (220-193, 217-224, 163-196, 195-201, 189-179, 198-161, and 150-197).
Taylor Russell would lead the way with a total pinfall of 1,307 to finish in fourth place and made the Stallings Invitational All-Tournament team. Samantha Johnson (1,231) and Annie Hurley (1,212) finished in 10th and 13th, respectively, to finish the Blazers in the top 25 individually.
The Blazers have completed their fall portion of their schedule with a 28-21 record through four tournaments. UAB will continue their schedule on February 7 for the Wildcat Classic in Orlando, Fla. hosted by Bethune-Cookman.
