BIRMINGHAM – A late comeback effort came up short as the UAB women's soccer team fell to Charlotte 2-1 on Thursday night at BBVA Field.
Freshman Asha Zuniga netted her first career goal with 5:43 remaining in the contest after she was fouled in the box and found the bottom left corner on her penalty kick.
Zuniga's goal drew the Blazers (4-5-4, 2-3-1 C-USA) within one, but it was not enough to overcome Charlotte's two-goal lead as the 49ers hung on for the 2-1 decision.
UAB gave up a goal to the 49ers (11-3-0, 6-1-0) in the seventh minute as Julia Patrum slotted home a rebounded shot for her fourth goal of the season. That was one of nine Charlotte shots in the first half and the 49ers ultimately held a 14-9 advantage in that category overall.
The Blazers had seven of their nine shots in the second half and applied pressure throughout the second 45 minutes. However, Charlotte gained a 2-0 lead with 13 minutes left when Brianna Morris curled in a corner kick into the top right corner for her first goal of the season, which proved to be the game winner.
Zuniga ended up with a team-high three shots for UAB, but Charlotte keeper Abby Stapleton made five saves on the evening to preserve the victory.
The Blazers are back in action this Sunday, Oct. 20, when they welcome Old Dominion to BBVA Field at 12 p.m.
