WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- UAB is 2-0 against UTSA since returning to action in 2017. Two years ago, the Blazers registered a 24-19 road victory, while last year UAB put up school records for total yards (668) and rushing yards (419) in a 52-3 victory at Legion Field.
- The Blazers will be tested by the UTSA pass defense which leads Conference USA and ranks sixth nationally, allowing just 153.8 passing yards per game.
- Tyler Johnston III has thrown for 1,209 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year. His top three receivers in Austin Watkins Jr., Myron Mitchell and Kendall Parham have combined for 994 of those 1,209 yards (82.3%).
- Conversely, UTSA's rush defense ranks 13th in conference. The Blazers demonstrated a dominant rush offense in the second half of the Rice game amidst a torrential downpour.
- The Blazers rushed for 109 yards in the second half against Rice in inclement weather behind Lucious Stanley's career night. Stanley established career bests in carries (19), yards (88) and touchdowns (2), both of which came in the third quarter to secure a 35-20 victory.
- UAB enters this weekend's contest ranked ninth nationally in total defense. The Blazers held Rice to just 48 total yards in the second half of last week's victory and are yet to allow more than 20 points in any game this season.
- The Blazers recovered four fumbles last week and now rank second nationally in fumble recoveries. UAB has eight on the year and only trails Mississippi State, who has recovered 10.
- Leading the defensive charge is junior linebacker Kristopher Moll. The Miami native had a career high 15 tackles against Rice and added 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries. Despite missing the first game of the season, Moll leads the team in total tackles (35) and ranks seventh in C-USA at 8.8/tackles per game.
- Along with ranking ninth in total defense, UAB also boasts lofty national ranks for sacks per game (9th, 3.75/game), third down defense (12th, 27.1%), scoring defense (18th, 16.4/game) and tackles for loss per game (24th, 7.6/game).
