Lunsford, Mustafa Power UAB to 2-0 Win at Georgia State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB experienced déjà vu on Sunday afternoon when second-half strikes from Jamiera Lunsford and Kamilah Mustafa powered the Blazers' women's soccer team to a 2-0 road win over Georgia State in front of 312 fans at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The duo masterminded a similar plotline on August 26, when the forwards scored goals in the second period against Samford to secure a 2-0 victory. Lunsford and Mustafa are the only Blazers to find the back of the net this season.
"We played a really tough opponent in Georgia State tonight," head coach Erica Demers said. "The game got pretty physical and I think tactically we lost our rhythm. We found our way a little bit more in the second half, but we are continuing to press upon our team that we need more for everyone. It was great for Kamilah and Jamiera to score much needed goals for us again tonight."
UAB (2-3-0) has been extremely successful in its three meetings against Georgia State, outscoring the Panthers, 5-0, in those games. With the win, GSU becomes one of six teams that the Blazers have held scoreless over a three-match stretch in program history (Birmingham Southern, DePaul, Houston, Southern Miss and Mississippi State).
The Blazer offense came alive in the second half after being outshot 9-0 in the opening period, with the first shot of the contest for the Green and Gold finding the back of the net courtesy of Lunsford. Senior forward Caroline Kehrer led the Blazers with three shots on the evening, one of which was one frame, while Mustafa and Regan Kommor each added two of their own.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty capped off her incredible weekend with seven more saves en route to securing her second clean sheet of the season. Daugherty compiled 18 saves over the last two contests after stopping a career-high 11 shots against Memphis on Thursday.
Georgia State (2-3-1) was led by Brooke Shank and Monique Hundley, who each posted four shots for the Panthers in the loss.
It took UAB almost an hour to record its first shot of the game, but Lunsford made sure that the first shot counted when she rifled the ball past goalkeeper Lydia Fraga to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead at the 59:39 mark of the match.
Mustafa doubled the Green and Gold's advantage just under 20 minutes later, roping the ball past Fraga from the penalty spot to double the lead and ultimately secure the 2-0 victory.
UAB returns to the pitch on Friday, September 7, when the Blazers travel to Nashville, Tenn., to square off with Belmont. Kickoff at E.S. Rose Park is slated for 6:30 p.m. CST.
