BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Entering the final weekend of non-conference play, the UAB women's soccer team looks to win back-to-back games for the first time this season as it heads to Music City on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. showdown with Belmont.
The Blazers (2-3-0) enter the weekend 1-1 on the road this season and boast a 7-3-2 record away from home under head coach Erica Demers.
"First and foremost, we are excited to be together for a couple games away from campus," Demers said. "Being on the road brings forth some new challenges which I am excited for our team. Going into this weekend, we have continued to focus on areas that need improvement, one being our attack. We have lacked a purpose in the final third so we have challenged our group to focus on one particular area and we are hoping to build, be consistent in this area and create opportunities."
Kamilah Mustafa and Jamiera Lunsford both found the back of the net against Georgia State, the second time that the duo has led the Blazers to victory. Mustfa and Caroline Kehrer lead the Blazers' attack with five shots apiece on the year, while Lunsford currently carries the most points on the team with five.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty has been a stud for the Green and Gold, coming up with seven saves in Sunday's game to preserve her second clean sheet of the season. Her record-breaking weekend, which included an 11-save effort against Memphis, saw her earn Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the sixth time in her career.
Belmont (1-3-0) is coming off its first win of the season, a 2-1 double overtime triumph at home over LIU Brooklyn courtesy of a Megan Michela game winner in the 107th minute.
Sophomore Julie Garst has been the Bruins' top offensive threat so far this season, leading the team in shots (15), shots on goal (7), points (4) and goals (2). Four other Bruins have found the back of the net at least once this season.
The two programs will meet for the third time when they play on Friday, with UAB leading the all-time series, 1-0-1. The lone victory in the series came on Sept. 2, 2011, when the Green and Gold defeated the Bruins, 3-2, in double overtime.
Fans can follow all of the action on Friday via the livestream on the OVC Digital Network or through Belmont's live stats.
