Mustafa’s First Half Goal Helps UAB to 1-1 Draw at Belmont

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – An hour and 23-minute-long rain delay did not spoil an overall good night for the UAB women's soccer team as a goal from Kamilah Mustafa early in the first half earned the Blazers a 1-1 overtime draw at Belmont on Friday night.
Mustafa has scored in back-to-back games for the first time in her career and now leads the Green and Gold with three goals on the season.
"I think a delay is always a tough mental fight for any program," head coach Erica Demers said. "Belmont is a high-pressing, direct team and they made it difficult for us to try and slow the game down and possess at all. We showed some character in the overtime period with a couple countering moments, but unfortunately we could not capitalize on any of them. It was nice having Jamiera and Kamilah connect again in the first half to get an early goal that we have been missing so far this season."
Sophomore Regan Kommor led all UAB attackers with three shots in the game, while Mustafa added two shots of her own including her goal. Jamiera Lunsford added a shot and assist against the Bruins, while Megan Hudgens and Sarah Buse each took aim at goal once for the Blazers.
UAB's defense again found itself under pressure after being outshot 25-8, but only conceded once en route to its first tie of the season. Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty continued her solid play between the pipes with five saves.
Belmont's (1-3-2) lone goal came from Niki Clements, while the Bruins' offense was led by Julie Garst, who finished the night with six shots and an assist.
UAB took the early lead in the 12th minute when Lunsford found the ball in space and drove towards the end line before crossing it in to a waiting Mustafa, who finished with authority past the Belmont keeper to put the Blazers up 1-0.
The Bruins responded five minutes later when Clements rifled a shot off a UAB defender and past an outstretched Daugherty to knot the match up at one goal apiece.
Both team's continued to battle until the 61st minute, when the skies opened up and lightning forced the players to leave the pitch. Upon returning to the field, neither side was able to find a goal in regulation to force overtime.
The teams gave it their all in the free 10-minute period, but were unable able to find a breakthrough in overtime, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
UAB returns to action on Sunday when the Blazers travel to Florence, Alabama, to meet up with North Alabama for the first time in program history. Kickoff from the Bill Jones Athletic Complex is set for 1 p.m.
