Late PKs Give UAB 2-1 Win Over North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Sophomore Kamilah Mustafa saw her name called twice in the final 10 minutes of the match and she came up huge both times, converting two penalties late to power the UAB women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over North Alabama on Sunday.
Mustafa has now scored five goals on the year, three of which have come in the last two matches, while she extended her scoring streak to three matches. With the victory, UAB enters conference play next week riding a three-match unbeaten streak dating back to September 2.
"Jamiera Lunsford has been a constant competitor for us and earned a hard-fought penalty that Kamilah was able to capitalize on," head coach Erica Demers said. "We have a week ahead of us to get better and improve before we open league play with Louisiana Tech next Sunday."
UAB (3-3-1) had one of its best offensive outputs of the season on Sunday, outshooting North Alabama 13-10 and 9-4 in shots on goal. Lunsford led the team with five of those shots, while Caroline Kehrer added three.
After conceding eight chances to North Alabama in the first period, the Blazer defense locked down in the second half, holding the Lions to just two shots. Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty made three saves in the game, all of which came in the first period of play.
The Lions were led by forward Shelby Wall, who finished the game with a goal and three shots in 90 minutes of action.
North Alabama (5-3) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Wall rifled a shot from a tough angle over an outstretched Daugherty and into the upper side netting to put the Lions up, 1-0.
With time running out in the contest, Lunsford broke free and made a surging run towards goal before being taken down in the box by a North Alabama defender, forcing the referee to point to the spot. Mustafa stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper to knot the match up at one goal apiece with eight minutes to play.
Exactly two minutes later, the referee pointed to the spot again after the ball was handled by a Lion defender. With the game on the line, Mustafa once again stepped up and buried her penalty to clinch the 2-1 victory for UAB.
"I was thinking, I have to finish this for my team," Mustafa said. "My team did everything to make it possible for me to just do the easy part. I was focused on keeping my cool and letting God and the ball handle the rest."
