Blazers Battle to 1-1 Tie Against Memphis

BIRMINGHAM – Battling into the fifth extra time match of the year, the UAB men's soccer team played to a double overtime 1-1 tie against Memphis on Tuesday night at BBVA Compass Field.
Tonight marked the first tie of the season for the Green and Gold and their first since Oct. 24, 2017.
"Like every game this year I thought we played really well," head coach Mike Getman said. "We controlled how the game was played. In the computer Memphis is No. 26 in the nation and I thought we outplayed them and created more chances than it had. They are good and they created some opportunities as well, but I was pleased with our overall performance as I have been every match this year."
UAB (1-5-1, 0-1-0) struck first as Philip Makinde found the back of the net in the 25th minute when his shot netted in the high right corner to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
Memphis (4-2-2, 0-0-0) hit the equalizer in the 36th minute when David Zalzman's penalty kick went past UAB keeper, Seth Torman, to tie the match at one.
UAB attempted to net the golden goal as Blake White was able to get off two shots in the 106th minute, but one sailed high and the other was blocked.
"I know that if we keep playing this hard, and this well, the wins are going to come," Getman said. "This was a good overall result, not the win I thought we deserved, but it was a good performance and that is what we are still focused on."
For Makinde, it was the forwards third career goal, and his first since finding the back of the net at Memphis last season on Aug. 27.
Torman and James Teal split time in goal for the Blazers. Torman played the first half and allowed one goal with a pair of saves, while Teal played the remainder of the match and allowed no goals with three saves.
UAB picks back up Conference USA play on Saturday, Sept. 22, when it welcomes Marshall to BBVA Compass Field. Kickoff between the Blazers and Thundering Herd is slated for 7 p.m.
Fans can receive admission into every home UAB men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
