BIRMINGHAM - Under first-year head coach Ryan Ashburn, the UAB women's golf team is set to open the season at the USA Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama at Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove - Crossing Course.
The Blazers will be in a field that consists of Alabama State, Arkansas Little Rock, Arkansas State, Cal Baptist, Georgia State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Stetson, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss, UT Arlington, Tulane, and Western Kentucky.
The Blazers have a very optimistic outlook for the 2018-19 season as their top returner Maria Donado headlines a team that also consists of juniors Kendall Johnson and Tia Teiniketo who are both junior college transfers.
Johnson was the No. 6 ranked junior college player in the nation last season and helped lead Dayton State to back-to-back NJCAA National Championships. A native of Finland, Teiniketo was the No. 1 ranked NAIA player a season ago and both players look to bolster the top of UAB's lineup along with Donado.
Sophomore Stephenie Fowler and freshman Lexie Dawson round out UAB's lineup this weekend, while Kenna Hughes will be playing as an individual.
UAB has experienced tremendous success in this tournament each of the last two years. In 2016, the Blazers carded the school 54-hole record with an 886, and outdid that last year with an 877 which holds as the current program best.
The course in Mobile this weekend is a Par 72 that will play 6,316 yards. The three-day tournament is scheduled for 18 holes on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
