UAB Drops Heartbreaker to Memphis, 1-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Lockdown defense and a career-high night from goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty forced extra time on Thursday night, but a Memphis goal late in the first overtime period helped the Tigers steal a 1-0 victory against the UAB women's soccer team at BBVA Compass Field.
Daugherty finished the game with 11 saves, one more than her previous career high of 10, which she set at North Texas on Oct. 18, 2015. The 11 saves are tied for the ninth most in a single game in program history and are the most recorded in a contest by a Blazer since Angie Jimenez posted 11 saves against UTSA in 2014.
"We left the game feeling very proud of our players in terms of how hard they fought," head coach Erica Demers said. "In the short time that I've been with this group of young women, the amount of resiliency that they show in certain moments has created such a great foundation for our program and our direction."
Although the Blazers absorbed constant pressure all night and were outshot 24-2, the defense played lights out in the loss, holding a Memphis squad that averaged 3.33 goals per contest entering Thursday's game to just one score.
UAB's (1-3-0) best looks came from seniors Megan Hudgens and Jessica Do, who each recorded one shot.
After producing eight shots in a scoreless opening 45 minutes of play, the visitors poured on the pressure in the second half with 13 more shots, six of which were on frame. However, the Blazers' defense held firm and forced overtime with the score tied up a 0-0.
With all signs pointing towards a second overtime period, Memphis (3-1-0) broke the deadlock with the decisive golden goal in the 98th minute after Jessica Lisi found space at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot with pace past an outstretched Daugherty to seal the 1-0 victory for the Tigers.
"We still have areas that we need to improve on and obviously losing is not something that we want, but in areas that we have been focusing on, we got better tonight," Demers said. "Now we have to regroup, refocus and get ready for Sunday against Georgia State."
UAB returns to action on Sunday, September 2, when the Green and Gold travel to Atlanta to do battle with Georgia State. Kickoff from the GSU Soccer Field is slated for 6 p.m. CST.
