BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off its first win of the young 2018 season over cross-town rival Samford, the UAB women's soccer team renews its longtime rivalry with Memphis on Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host the Tigers at BBVA Compass Field.
Memphis and UAB are no strangers to each other as the two teams will meet for the 22nd time on Thursday, the most games the Blazers have played against a single opponent in program history.
"We have continued to address certain defensive needs that we need to improve on," head coach Erica Demers said. "Our backline, anchored by Kelsey Daugherty, Melissa Cameron and Alex Otto, have done a great job staying engaged and communicating with their teammates to stay organized. Memphis is a great team and one that we have a great deal of respect for. Their players fight and work extremely hard and it will be important that we match their intensity."
UAB (1-2-0) is coming off a thrilling 2-0 win over Samford last Sunday, where goals from Kamilah Mustafa and Jamiera Lunsford propelled the Blazers to their first win of the 2018 season. The duo currently leads the Blazers statistically with three shots apiece, while Lunsford leads the team with three points following her performance on Sunday. Four other Blazers have recorded at least two shots on the year.
Between the sticks, Daugherty recorded seven saves against Samford to earn her first clean sheet of the campaign and up her season save total to 18. The senior has played every minute so far this year for the Green and Gold.
Memphis (2-1-0) is coming off its first setback of the season, a 5-2 loss to Mississippi State, after opening the year with 4-0 wins over Omaha and Central Arkansas. The Tigers are led by sophomore Clarissa Larisey, who has scored three goals on 12 shots to open the season, while Jessia Lisi has scored twice in 2018.
The Tigers enter Thursday's game leading the all-time series, 12-8-1, and having won the last five meetings dating back to 2010. Last season, Memphis narrowly escaped with a victory, defeating UAB, 2-1, in overtime.
Tickets for Thursday's contest are $5 for adults and $3 for youth and can be purchased at the gate, online at uabsports.com, or by calling the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-UAB1.
Fans can receive access to every women's soccer, men's soccer, women's basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office (205) 975-UAB1 for more details.
