BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After opening the season at home last week, the UAB women's soccer team hits the road for the first time in 2018 as it makes the short drive south on Friday to take on the (24/25) Auburn Tigers at 6:30 p.m. at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
The Blazers are eyeing their first win over the Tigers since a 3-0 victory on Oct. 31, 1999, while seeking their first win over an opponent from the Southeastern Conference since defeating Vanderbilt, 3-1, on Aug. 23, 2013.
UAB will also look for its first win over a top-25 opponent in program history after Auburn moved to No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 25 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll this week.
"We have continued to coach our defensive organization this week," head coach Erica Demers said. "We want our team to understand what their roles are and the discipline that must come within that. We are excited to go on the road and challenge ourselves against a great program like Auburn."
UAB came up just short in its season opener against South Alabama, falling to the Jaguars, 1-0, at BBVA Compass Field. Despite getting outshot 15-5, goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty kept the team within striking distance with five big saves.
Junior Natalie Presedo led the Blazers with a career-best two shots against the Jags, while three different Blazers notched career-high minutes in the loss. Newcomers Brenda Bishop, Tay Collum and Izzy Varnado also made their collegiate debuts in the Green and Gold, with Bishop earning her first career start.
Auburn got its 2018 campaign off to a great start, earning a 4-0 win at Samford to open the season before returning home and completing a 2-1 upset victory over No. 18 South Florida. Junior Bri Folds leads the way for the Tigers with five points, two goals and an assist, while fellow junior Jessie Gerow has netted two goals for Auburn this year.
Friday's contest will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two sides, with Auburn holding a slim 6-4 advantage in the series. It will be the first meeting between the programs since Aug. 28, 2015, which the Tigers won, 4-0, in Auburn.
Admission to Friday's match is free, while fans not able to attend the game can catch all the action on the SEC Network+, with Mac Matthews and Andy Burcham on the call.
