NORFOLK, Va. – The UAB baseball team used a ninth-inning rally to take the second game of a doubleheader, 7-5, on Saturday at Old Dominion after the Monarchs took game one, 12-0.
UAB goes to 16-18, 8-7 while the Monarchs move to 11-23, 4-11.
"After the game one that was all Old Dominion, our kids had to get off the mat three times in game two," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We took the lead and then put a three-spot up, Old Dominion put a three-spot up, we tied it, Carter missed a home run by inches that ends up as a triple and we don't score, they score on a ground ball that bounces over our first baseman's head and that's their lead run. Then we got up off the mat again, we got some help with some walks and then Cole got the big hit with us and a sacrifice fly. I'm proud of them. It's a great win and one we really needed."
Game One
Old Dominion took a lead in the third inning and that it did not relinquish as Will Morgan hit a two-out, three-run home run to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead. The Monarchs added six runs on five hits, including consecutive home runs, to lead 9-0 after the fourth inning.
UAB was then able to hold Old Dominion scoreless until the seventh inning when the Monarchs pushed three more runs across the plate on two hits to push their lead to 12-0.
Morgan Maguire (3-3) went the distance for the Monarchs, throwing nine innings and allowing no runs on just three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Ryan Wesson (3-1) took the loss for UAB, lasting just 3.1 innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Tyler Tolbert went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Blazers, collecting his seventh multi-hit game of the season.
Game Two
Old Dominion took the first lead of the game in the first inning as Bryce Windham singled to center field. One batter later, Culver Lamb would triple to right center, scoring Windham and give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
UAB countered in the second inning after Brett Blackwood and Carter Pharis hit back-to-back singles followed by a Thomas Johns walk to load the bases with no outs. Stephen Dobbs then hit a two RBI single through the right side and moved Johns to second to give UAB its first lead of the day, 2-1.
Later in the inning, a sacrifice bunt from Price Visintainer advanced Johns and Dobbs 90 feet before Antonio Ralat hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Johns and give UAB a 3-1 lead.
Old Dominion answered in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on three hits to regain the lead at 4-3, before an inning-ending fly out to left field stopped the damage and left two Monarchs stranded.
The Blazers tied the game at 4-4 in sixth inning as Dobbs hit a two-out RBI single into center field, scoring Pharis from second.
Old Dominion regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth as Erik Stock hit a RBI double up the middle to score Culver Lamb and put the Monarchs ahead, 5-4, with just one inning remaining.
UAB responded in the top of the ninth in a big way, as Visintainer and Ralat reached base on back-to-back walks before Tolbert reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher. Cole Collins then delivered his first hit of the day, a two-RBI single through the left side to give UAB a 6-5 lead.
Schultz provided an insurance run a batter later as he hit a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the UAB to 7-5 and ultimately secure its third consecutive C-USA road series win.
Ty Harris (1-2) earned the win for the Blazers as he threw two innings and allowed just one hit with one strikeout. Carson Jones also came out of the bullpen and threw a career-high 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with a career-best five strikeouts.
Pharis led UAB at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a season-high two runs. Dobbs also finished the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
