Blazers Down UT Martin for Second Straight Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team won its second consecutive match when it turned in a 6-1 victory over UT Martin Wednesday afternoon at George Ward Park.
Alexandra Shchipakina and Sophie Dodds opened doubles play with a 6-2 victory over Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell at No. 2 to give the Blazers an early edge. Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz followed with a 6-4 at No. 1 to clinch the point and put UAB ahead 1-0.
Shchipakina tallied her second win of the match when she bested Asel Jumamukhambetova 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position. Herrmann gave UAB a 3-0 lead with her 6-2, 6-0 win over Jemima Potter at No 2, and Sophie Dodds clinched the point and the match for the Blazers with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Olha Burak at No. 5.
"It was a solid team effort today," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "UT Martin has beaten us the past two years, so it was nice to get a little payback today. Now we have to get ready for a very strong Murray State team on Friday."
Megan Bertrands and Dominika Hrabalova also posted singles wins for the Blazers.
UAB returns to the court Friday at 2 p.m. against Murray State from George Ward Park.
