IRVING, Texas – On the heels of leading UAB to wins over Marshall and WKU by an average of 21.0 points per game, Blazer guard Zack Bryant was selected as the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Sunday.
Bryant averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists last week in helping UAB close the regular season having won three of its last four games. A native of Hastings, Fla., Bryant also shot a combined 42.3 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three-point range against the Thundering Herd and Hilltoppers.
Bryant opened the week with 11 points, two rebounds and two assists Thursday in a 91-77 victory over Marshall. His performance helped UAB hand the Thundering Herd their third-largest margin of defeat this season.
On Saturday against WKU, Bryant scored 17 points and added a career-high eight rebounds as UAB cruised to a 101-73 victory, marking the first time any opponent has reached triple digits against the Hilltoppers since 2010.
Bryant also added five assists, two steals and made three 3-pointers in the victory over WKU.
It's the second time this season Bryant has earned the distinction as Conference USA Freshman of the Week.
Bryant and the sixth-seeded Blazers return to action Wednesday at 9 p.m. against No. 11 seed Florida Atlantic in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament.
